A wildcard is a special entry awarded to a player who has not qualified for a tennis tournament. It is usually awarded to young up-and-coming players or to players who have previously won the tournament. Roger Federer has been awarded wildcards to a number of tournaments, including the 2008 French Open where he won the title. He has also received wildcards for the US Open, Wimbledon and the Australian Open. In 2020, he received a wildcard for the Australian Open, his first major title in five years.
